Common Types of Exhibition Stands Explained

Which Exhibition Stand Type Is Right For you? Common Types of Exhibition Stands Explained

Picture this, you’re at a trade show. Hundreds of stands stretch out in front of you, a sea of banners, branded exhibition displays, and people nervously hovering near brochure holders.

Then, about halfway down the conference centre, something stops you. You’re not sure exactly what it is. Maybe it’s the lighting. Maybe it’s the way the space feels different from all the others around it. Maybe someone is actually running an interesting promotion or demo inside it. Whatever it is, you walk over, and a lot of other event goers follow.

That stand didn’t happen by accident. Behind it was a deliberate decision: the right type of stand, designed with purpose, for that specific event and brand. It starts with knowing which type of stand is actually right for you.

According to research by Trade Show Labs, trade shows contribute to around 33% of a company’s new business annually, and 72% of attendees are more likely to buy from exhibitors they meet in person. Your stand is one of the most important marketing investments you’ll make for your events.

Below we break down some of the most common types of exhibition stands, and explain how to figure out which one is right for your business.

1. Shell Scheme Stands

Shell scheme stands are where most businesses begin when starting out at events. They’re pre-built modular structures that are usually provided by the event organiser.

It’s essentially a basic frame with walls and carpet. You can easily add to the structure with own imagery and furniture. They’re a cost-effective option and relatively quick to set up, which makes them popular with businesses that are just getting started with exhibitions.

The downside to these is that they can look a little boring and generic, especially if you haven’t invested in high resolution graphics or thought about the layout.

With the right display panels and a bit of creativity, you can still transform standard shell schemes into something that looks catchy. Worth reading: our blog on why great expo signage is key to trade show success which covers exactly this.

2. Modular Exhibition Stands

Modular stands are built from reusable, reconfigurable components that can be adapted to different floor sizes and layouts.

They’re a common investment by businesses that plan to attend a lot of expos. This is because the same stand can be tweaked and reshaped to suit a 3×3 space one month and a 6×6 the next.

This year, modular design has become more sophisticated than ever. Companies like Oracle have long championed this approach, using adaptable stand systems that maintain a strong brand presence regardless of the event or venue.

Technology surrounding modular systems has improved significantly too, with lighter materials and faster assembly times becoming the norm. For more on what’s shaping stand design right now, take a look at our round-up of 2026 exhibition stand trends.

3. Custom-Built Exhibition Stands

Custom-built stands, are exactly what they seem to be – stands designed and built from scratch to your exact specifications. There are no off-the-shelf components included with these ones. Just a stand that’s built for your brand, campaign, your products, and your goals.

Custom stands out of all stand types, could be said to be the showstoppers you see at major trade show events. With multi-storey builds, statement lighting, integrated meeting rooms, and immersive product displays.

They require more investment, but for brands that want to make a statement, there’s no design that really compares to a fully custom build. The results can be remarkable. According to research cited by Cvent, 48% of exhibitors say that eye-catching stands are the single biggest driver of booth traffic.

That’s a direct return on great design. At Ausrail, we designed and built a striking custom stand for John Holland that was hard to walk past on the show floor, with clean lines, dramatic lighting, and a layout that worked hard for their team throughout the event.

4. Pop-Up Displays

Pop-up displays are lightweight, portable, and incredibly easy to set up, often in just a few minutes. They’re typically fabric or graphic panel-based and fold away neatly into a carry case. Perfect for smaller events, retail activations, roadshows, or situations where you need a professional-looking backdrop without the logistics of a full stand build.

They work particularly well for businesses attending multiple events throughout the year where portability is a priority. Don’t underestimate what you can achieve with a well-designed pop-up though. A quality print finish and strong graphic layout can make a real impact, even on a compact display. You can see examples of this kind of work in our brand activations gallery.

5. Inline or Row Stands

Inline stands (also called row stands) sit in a line with other exhibitors, open mostly only on one side to the main aisle. They’re a common allocation at large trade shows and work well when designed thoughtfully.

The key with inline stands is making the most of your depth and height. You want to draw people in from the aisle, so front-facing displays, clear signage, and strong visual hierarchy matter a lot.

This year, we’re seeing more exhibitors use digital screen integration and interactive elements along the front face of inline stands to capture passing foot traffic. Given that 92% of trade show attendees come specifically to discover new products, making your stand visually arresting from the aisle is one of the smartest things you can do. Our blog on maximising your exhibition stand with video is worth a read if you’re considering this approach.

6. Island Stands

Island stands are open on all four sides, and are usually set up in the middle of the show floor rather than against a wall. They offer the greatest visibility and creative freedom of any stand type, but they also demand the most thought in terms of design. Every angle needs to be considered, and there’s nowhere to hide if the execution isn’t right.

These are typically reserved for larger floor space allocations and bigger budgets, but when done wel

l, an island stand is genuinely magnetic. Think immersive environments, product demonstration zones, seating areas, and bold overhead structures that make you visible from across the hall. Trends Shaping Current Exhibition Stand Design

No matter what type of stand you choose, a few key trends are influencing how the best exhibitions are designed right now. For a deeper look, see our dedicated post on 2026 exhibition stand design trends.

Sustainable Materials

Eco-conscious design has moved from a nice-to-have to almost an expectation at most events. Timber, bamboo, recycled fabric, and energy-efficient LED lighting are all becoming popular.

Research from UPrinting found that 92% of regular exhibitors are now actively making efforts to minimise their carbon footprint, including through reusable stand components. Forward-thinking exhibitors are also thinking about what happens to their stand after the show, repurposing and recycling materials rather than sending them to landfill.

Tech Integration

Interactive displays, touchscreens, and augmented reality are being woven into stands of all sizes. Samsung and Sony are well-known for pushing interactive product demo experiences at tech shows, but this approach is filtering down to brands in every sector. Even a well-placed screen running dynamic content can dramatically improve visitor engagement. See how video can transform your exhibition stand for practical tips.

Personalisation and Data

AI-powered personalisation has been breaking in to the exhibition world, with custom product recommendations and real-time engagement tracking becoming more accessible. ‘

Amazon has been ahead of this trend, using AI at trade shows to personalise the visitor experience. According to Gitnux, 35% of event organisers are already using AI for matchmaking and attendee engagement at shows. This is a trend worth keeping an eye on as it filters through to exhibitors of all sizes.
